ABSTRACT
The Marshall Islands is an archipelago of widely scattered, low-lying coral atolls, now administered as the Republic of the Marshall Islands. At least, that is a common way of describing the country. This portrayal of the Marshallese territory—seemingly neutral and straightforwardly descriptive—in fact implicitly encodes a number of assumptions, all of which may be contested.
