The Child in Larger Contexts

IFS therapy with kids and their families will very often require coordination and work with key school personnel-teachers, principals, school counselors, psychologists, and social workers. From the point of view of the school, responding to any individual child’s behavior will have to be done in the larger context of maintaining stability, peace, and decorum in the classroom and extended school environment. While the IFS therapist may have the “luxury” of sitting patiently with the agitated child, the school can tolerate this only up to the point where teachers’ and other students’ safety and unobstructed learning environment are at risk.
