ABSTRACT

In Africa, as elsewhere, education plays an important role in the formation of the soldier and the officer. It aims to provide military personnel both with a way of living, and with practical knowledge, or what the English sometimes call “know-how.” Seeking an appropriate way of living or being in the world focuses upon the character and behavior of the individual soldier, while “know-how” refers to the development of each soldier’s operational capabilities. It is the combination of these two types of knowledge that builds military professionalism.
