ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a five-year-long dance education project, entitled "The entire school dances!" and a broad study that accompanied it. The project aimed to enhance the role of embodiment in all learning and develop democratic, collaborative pedagogical practices that involve individuals and communities in a holistic way. Whereas the study aimed to develop a conception of dance as embodied learning, the chapter focuses on dance as embodied dialogue. Although the focus of the study was on a particular school, the chapter discusses the educational value of dance and embodiment in any school context and describes the significance of embodied learning and the arts education in all learning. The Kartanonkoski school teachers were encouraged to integrate dance and creative movement activities in their own classrooms. Over time, the pupils developed skills in creating movements and making decisions in groups concerning the composition, music and style of dance.
