ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a personal perspective on what the author sees in the dance education community, what he sees in the work he does, and what he would like to see more of in the future. When the teacher works with the students to build meanings of dance together, then the educational value of dance resonates in the classroom. When children and teachers collaborate, they see dance for what it is, a physical and intellectual amalgam of ideas, thinking and laughing together. Dancing is a career and requires skills and so does teaching dance. The past and emerging roles and functions of dance will not be fully realised if future dance teachers are not more literate and practised in the art of teaching. Dance's future relies on better dance educators. The skill of learning how to transform a group of people into a 'community of dancers' is vital for the future of dance education.
