ABSTRACT

In creative dance education, where the individual voice is to be encouraged, the close-knit social fabric of the Asian cultures that populate Singapore and the focus on the importance of the group over the self pose a challenge. This chapter illustrates a positive framework for an Integrated Dance Education Programme as exemplified by the one at Shuqun Primary School in Singapore. One of the objectives of the programme at Shuqun Primary School is to develop a structure whereby a student's interest in dance can be sustained throughout his/her primary education and beyond. Another broad aim of the programme is to provide talented students with a platform to experience dance as a performing art. A coherently planned, systematic and developmentally appropriate creative dance programme can foster creativity, divergent thinking and integrated learning. The value of a single, individual human being and the importance of his inquiring mind are fundamental not only to dance education but also to education in general.
