ABSTRACT

In a multinational company, a common performance appraisal and feedback process communicates the key performance dimensions across units of the company. Multisource feedback can be valuable to expatriates in multinational companies who are not familiar with their host culture. The feedback can help them understand the expectations of the different sources of feedback and be more realistic in setting performance goals. Multisource feedback captures the high complexity of the global work environment, and this may help managers adapt to their new environment. Multinational firms must prepare managers to operate effectively in other cultures. Cross-cultural training may apply a number of different methods. A popular method of cultural awareness training uses role-playing encounters between a US citizen and a person from another culture with contrasting values. The method highlights awareness of differences but not necessarily skills for enhancing sensitivity.
