ABSTRACT

It is every teacher's responsibility to make good provision for the children with special educational needs, including those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The SENCO plays a pivotal role in shaping and steering the sort of continuing professional development (CPD) that will equip colleagues to improve their understanding and develop expertise in this respect. Tim Brighouse quoting American researcher Professor Judith Little has said that four factors are visible in an outstanding school. A mixed economy of CPD activity will enable you to offer a good range of opportunities for staff to develop their knowledge and the skills. Appropriate medication combined with counselling and support can be extremely effective in countering the negative effects of ADHD. SENCOs and teachers can support parents in their decisions about medication, and when medication is prescribed, teachers should be vigilant in observing and reporting any side-effects. Providing professional development for colleagues is a key part of the SENCO/Inclusion manager role.
