Suggested criteria

In order to assess the extent of Christianity in Roman Britain, it is necessary to identify not only Christian cemeteries but also religious structures. Thomas (1981: 143-201, 213-20) went some con siderable way in this process but, while he identified several very likely or probable churches and baptisteries, he did not in every case set out clearly the criteria for such identification. In this chapter, the features of presumed Christian churches are examined, and a set of ranked criteria devised which, it is believed, will assist in the identification of Christian religious buildings in Roman Britain.
