ABSTRACT

In the lead-up to Rio+20, many countries commented on the ‘Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development’ and articulated the need to promote a better balance among its environmental, social and economic pillars. Despite the diffi culties experienced in fi nding common agreement on how to take this idea forward in practical terms, it is now well accepted that there needs to be a greater focus placed on the interlinkages among these pillars in responses to global sustainable development challenges.
