ABSTRACT

This essay presents Myong-hwan's lifelong learning activities in drumming by using the figuration of creating. Unlike the other people in this study, Myong-hwan Kim is an educated man and has travelled to Japan for secondary education. He is selected as a holder of National Intangible Cultural Asset status in the pansori drum in 1978. The focus of analysis is how he created the learning activities, how sociocultural-historical contexts are deployed in this creation, and what he lost in the same process. The essay is composed of a series of imaginary e-mails exchanged between Myong-hwan and author. In this composition, author tried to create a crevice for the reader to consider meanings of events and activities in Myong-hwan's life. While author writing this essay, he watched a pansori performance on and off through the internet. According to the source data, Myong-hwan enjoyed listening to the great pansori singer's long-playing phonograph records in his middle school days.
