ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Ki-nam's life and learning from the perspective of the body politics. He won the Presidential Award at the National Folk Music Contest in 1954, the Special Talent Award at the Jeonju Folk Art Contest in 1978 and the Distinguished Achievement Award at the National Folk Music Contest in 1978. The chapter provide a brief overview of how the folk music band functioned in traditional Korean society. The task of the essay presents here is not to trace the roots of Korean sociocultural-historical use of corporal punishment, but it is certain that Korean society has historically accepted corporal punishment. Corporal punishment is a distinctive feature of controlling a student's body in Korea. Korean people's enmeshment in corporal punishment is obvious while consider Koreans who are living in western cultures. The chapter ends by introducing another dimension of power that is deployed in Ki-nam's body, learning and life.
