ABSTRACT

One of the main focuses of the education system in Taiwan is on how to provide different types of curriculum to develop the potential of gifted students in the different academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or those who have other talents as well. This chapter aims to introduce these science education programmes for gifted students in Taiwan. Overall, the education system in Taiwan, including the gifted education system, is influenced by both Western education beliefs and Confucianism, which is rooted in the majority of Asian cultures. In Taiwan, gifted education, along with education for students with disabilities, is categorised as special education. Gifted education in elementary school is for gifted students who are identified as "general intellectual gifted" and is not divided into different professional areas; the identification begins in the third grade. Gifted education teachers in elementary schools need to earn gifted education credits in universities.
