ABSTRACT

There has been an international movement within science education promoting more emphasis within school science on teaching about the nature of science (NOS). There are good reasons to include teaching about the NOS in the school curriculum for all learners, and these are briefly rehearsed below. However, the main argument of the present chapter concerns the potential for teaching focused on NOS for meeting the educational needs of the most able learners: those sometimes labelled as ‘gifted’. It is argued that, by its nature, teaching about NOS offers opportunities to engage and challenge those learners who are judged to be gifted in science.
