ABSTRACT

To help spelling memories move from short-term to long-term memory and back again, a number of supportive strategies can be employed such as:

z Making the target spelling more significant, interesting and dynamic to heighten its impact on attention and memory. z Providing memory-tabs which act as a link between a word and its spelling to support

accurate recall over time. z Using multiple processing activities which stimulate a variety of responses including

those of interest, ownership, competition, novelty, surprise and understanding. z Remove memory overload by focusing lessons on specific topics. z Promoting the use of deep (rather than shallow) thinking.
