Characters in Conflict

Human beings fight for a variety of reasons. Earlier in Chapter 2 (“Overview of Hoplology”)

we outlined some of the overarching reasons for human conflict. We also mentioned how

each interaction of violence is particular unto itself. No two violent interactions are quite the

same. It is up to the performers of the violence to recognize the basic facts of the altercation

just as any actor would first find out the given circumstances of any scene. These indisputable

facts that surround a scene bring to bear how the characters will deal with the conflict between

them.
