ABSTRACT

Rosario, a 56-year-old elementary school teacher with a husband of 30 years, was looking forward to an empty nest after the couple’s three children left home. The oldest, a son aged 35, became a career Army officer; the eldest of her two daughters, who is 32, became an elementary school teacher like her mother; and the youngest, 29, is a stay-at-home mom with two children of her own. Rosario and her husband get along well with their daughter-in-law and sons-in-law and see their grandchildren often. After 29 years of field hockey, orchestra, summer camp, and the inevitable adolescent crises, Rosario and her husband were ready to relax and spend more time together, even as they continued to work.
