ABSTRACT

Lesley was the first musician; her introduction into the Early Learning Centre (ELC) programme was somewhat serendipitous. While music had been part of the ongoing curriculum research at the centre, no specialists were specifically employed to work in this area, as there were for visual arts and designated drama sessions. Lesley's musical background and identified some of the major influences on her beliefs and methods when working with young children. Lesley had taught music to individual children, but had never worked with such young children, or groups of children, in a programme where there was an integrated arts programme. The format of the music sessions followed a pattern in that the children were always introduced to an idea at the beginning, introductory listening and singing would occur with the greeting and then a mix of activities would follow, some linked to the introduction and others more like musical play.
