ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about an Early Learning Centre (ELC) choir that brought together children, teachers and researchers on an unusual journey of discovery for a pre-school. The voices of the children as they engaged in the singing project were expressed through pedagogical documentation, children's drawings and through the choir of combined voices of children and teachers. The chapter describes how the musical experience unfolded and how the choir became an integral part of the centre's culture. It discusses the children's choir, adult roles and participation, as well as providing a background. Performance is one notion often missing in early childhood arts and this is an aspect of music in this centre that has been developed as a visible part of the curriculum. The children's understanding of performance grew as they played and also experienced formal rehearsals, and the different roles that a performance consists of audience, performer, conductor, instrumentalist, reporter, even illustrator.
