ABSTRACT

Rowe and Adorno aesthetic of fragments did not engender the new 'new world' they so ardently pursued. And yet, Colin would not be satisfied with the Cornell studio projects, nor would Adorno find fulfillment in a purely serial musical world. And that is due to the fact that literary criticism can be no more literature than architectural criticism can be architecture. It may bring down walls, but it will not build the new house or the new city, let alone a new country or continent'. Colin Rowe sat through a lecture of mine, alone, hieratic, in a wheelchair, on the upper gangway of the amphitheater, silent, silhouetted against the darkened hall by a low security light. It was never interested in the Moscow oriented power politics of Rossi or Tafuri, or in Gregottis cloned monsters, or in Soviet or capitalist type mass industrialization of building elements.
