ABSTRACT

The information society is often contrasted with societies which are primarily industrial or agrarian. While information literacy activity certainly takes place in agrarian and industrial societies, in information society information is increasingly flowing through information and communications technology (ICT). This greatly facilitates the transmission of information it also leads to confusion as to what is ICT activity and what is information activity. An information society also covers many related sectors which include industrial and economic policy, technology policy, telecommunications policy as well as a huge sector including: social issues and policies that comprise e-government, education, e-health, media policy and cultural issues. Workplace information literacy activity is a collaborative experience. Rather than skills based, individual activity in the workplace information literacy is a collaborative and social activity. The changing nature of conceptions of information literacy can be understood by looking at two non-education sectors, the workplace and the public library.
