ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some sociological traits of the young generation and put them into the big picture of social transformations that China currently undergoes. The most important sociological trend in the new generation in China is probably the radical individualization of Chinese society, especially in the socioeconomic world of the youth. The growth of individualization is caused by three most important economic and technological forces: the market, money and the Internet. Employment is probably the most critical social issue concerning Chinese youth today. The year 2013 just saw the bulk of seven million college graduates joining China's burgeoning labor force. The most popular way to comment on current affairs is to use the youth language of Internet slangs. The 'diaosi' mentality is the hallmark of the contemporary Chinese youth. Formerly a 'derogatory' term describes someone infinitesimally powerless and worthless; the word turns out to be a key word in contemporary language.
