ABSTRACT

In a boat. To harness the power of the wind, sailors continually adjust the angle of the tiller and trim of the sail. They learn to respect the forces of nature-the wind, the water, the shoals along the shore. Working with these forces leads to smooth sailing. Experienced sailors know that moving with the wind takes less energy than moving against it. But that doesn’t always mean going with the flow; for instance, the boat must meet the waves head on or risk capsizing. Finally, the master sailor appreciates making the journey as much as reaching the destination.
