Word study

It is only in fairly recent years that educators and researchers have recognized fully the importance of including the study of words as part of any high quality literacy programme (Davis, 2013; Fountas and Pinnell, 2004; Joseph and Orlins, 2005; Rasinski and Zutell, 2010; Scott, 2010; Scraper, 2002). Word study is now regarded as a ‘best practice’ for combining spelling instruction and vocabulary enhancement. Word study, according to Leipzig (2000), is an alternative to traditional approaches to teaching spelling. This mainly morphemic approach helps students understand how words are constructed, and how and why some words share common groups of letters and obey certain rules.
