Informal methods for assessing spelling
Accurate assessment of students’ spelling provides the detailed information to guide teachers in their planning of lessons at group and individual levels. For example, regular assessment helps confi rm that all students are mastering a core of highfrequency words needed for daily writing, and are also learning the correct spelling of words related to new curriculum topics taught each week. In particular, assessment can help identify those students who are having major diffi culties developing effective spelling skills, so that appropriate interventions can be introduced. Regular assessment of students’ spelling can certainly be regarded as best practice.
