ABSTRACT

Sustainability in general and sustainability in business is first and foremost a social process, and a process having to do with demographics, behaviours, and even human nature.

Addressing overpopulation

In Chapter 3 we noted that investment in family planning, contraception, education, and change in cultural perceptions needs to be considered a crucial opportunity for sustainability investment. A whole range of social and environmental problems, including poverty, could be if not solved but definitely helped by stabilizing population growth. If businesses fail to recognize overpopulation as a threat to sustainability and fail to invest in solving it, all other efforts at sustainable production, consumption, and indeed business development are likely to fail in the long term.
