ABSTRACT

This chapter explores about the essential characteristics of sanctions and this ties directly to the importance of linking classroom-level sanctions to the wider school context of behavior management. The concept of student choice - as it relates to inappropriate behaviors and the associated sanctions. The chapter summarizes the importance of positive behavior intervention supports to prevent behavior that requires the restrictive sanctions. The Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports was established by the US Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) team is determining how the behavioral expectations and routines will be taught in and around the school. The chapter describes the essential characteristics of sanctions: timely, appropriate in scope and focus, meaningful to the student, and simple (TAMS). The zero tolerance policies address drugs, weapons, violence, smoking, and school disruption in efforts to protect all students safety and maintain a school environment that is conducive to learning.
