ABSTRACT

Gerald is a 17-year old African American with a learning disability who is halfway through his final year of secondary school. His teachers are concerned about his transition from secondary school, as he is 2 years behind his peers academically and has significant behaviour problems. His behaviour may have contributed to the academic problems he has encountered, as he has a history of running away from class and school, throwing furniture around and breaking things when upset at school. He has also had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, and physically aggressive behaviour towards peers and adults (punching, kicking, spitting). In the community, he has demonstrated behaviours that have required police involvement, such as painting graffiti and fire lighting.
