ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an analysis of the data collected in the study from the 36 interviews to provide an in-depth understanding regarding why men procure sexual services. Evidence within the findings chapters thus far, has provided a description of the types of men who purchase sexual services from the New South Wales sex work industry, as well as the logistics of this procurement. These findings challenge the simplicity of the binary discourse currently used to understand this social practice as evidenced through the questionnaire and interview data. The findings presented so far have also considered reasons for procurement, based on the survey data in the previous chapter. The cluster analysis, for example presented in Chapter 5, indicated a variety of reasons for men’s procurement of sexual services. In this chapter, these reasons are further examined using the qualitative data.
