ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses many aspects of sensate focus, including structuring the exercises, timing, pacing, function, selection of activities and structure. Moreover, it also emphasized the use of sensate focus in a systemic or balanced way. The new sensate focus is a cognitive-behavioral treatment approach incorporates psychoeducation about the sexual response and a series of incremental physical exercises performed outside of the therapeutic setting. Sensate focus is a form of in vivo desensitization intended to promote relaxation, communication, attention to physical sensations and the physical and emotional connection between partners. The broad category phase of sensate focus begins with a series of graduated exercises involving touching and later sensual touch. The couple must be prepared and must comprehend that touch and sensual pleasuring does not involve sexual interaction of any type. It is also believe that the proper application of sensate focus can make the difference between therapeutic success and failure. Commitment is an important factor in overcoming skepticism and pessimism.
