ABSTRACT

In sex therapy practice, individuals or couples request treatment for a specifi c problem or condition. Often, the problem is stated in the initial contact or during the fi rst session. Once the therapist begins to address the presenting problem, however, other factors can arise that obscure assessment and treatment. Factors that complicate treatment often involve faulty communication or misinformation, thereby intensifying the presenting problem. In this chapter we review some of the common factors that can interfere with treatment, including sexual ignorance, faulty cognitions, and sexual guilt and shame.
