ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the treatment of Erectile Disorder(ED) from a psychotherapeutic perspective; however, a therapist may also play a useful role when the problem has an organic basis and there is concurrent medical treatment. Once the ED problem has been resolved, there are other issues to consider. Some men with ED also have premature ejaculation (PE). The female partner who has not had sex for some time may experience Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder or may wish to work on having an orgasm coitally. The homework assignment that is given would be brief penetration. In cases where PE is about 2 minutes or less during intercourse, one begins with the squeeze technique. The squeeze technique is similar to the stop-start technique in that the man is focused on the gradually mounting sensations as he approaches orgasm. The squeeze automatically inhibits ejaculation. The quiet vagina technique is repeated several times with slowly increasing stimulation or movement.
