ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews the energy, environmental problems, and sustainable solutions in developing countries. It is estimated that the energy consumption around the world will be increased by 44 percent from 2006 to 2030 and the developing countries will replace the industrialized ones to become the largest group of energy consumers. The chapter discusses on the greenhouse gas emissions which lead to global warming. Being employed in many niche applications, it is typically three to five times more expensive now than other power generation methods. The accident at Three-Mile Island (TMI) caused an estimated monetary loss of US$74.2 million in business sales in non-manufacturing industries, $0.25-0.50 million in the agricultural sector and dollar 7.7 million in the value of production in manufacturing industries. After the Chernobyl accident, a striking increase of thyroid carcinoma was reported among children. The latest research shows that the poorest 20 percent of our world's population suffers the consequences of environmental problems severely.
