ABSTRACT

This chapter explains sex therapy as a unique subset of couple therapy contrary to the earlier perspectives about the nature of sexual problems and their associated treatments. Sex therapy involves working with the couple and, regardless of the presentation; the couple is the recipient of treatment. Integrating Sex and Marital Therapy, was the first to conceptualize sexual problems from a systems perspective contending that in sex therapy the partners must be treated as a couple rather than focusing on a symptomatic partner. This view of sex therapy was later expanded in texts on the treatment of erectile dysfunction and hypoactive sexual desire. Many men experiencing sexual dysfunction today often seek medications over psychotherapy to resolve sexual problems. Sex therapists would be well advised to consider Couple and Family Technology framework practice as a way to attend to both the specific sexual issues and unique couple issues that emerge within the context of sex therapy in a digital age.
