ABSTRACT

Having described in the previous chapter how the waste prevention behaviour (WPB) framework-model is conceptualised and its possible determinants based on previous academic study (Bortoleto et al. 2012), this chapter describes (i) the three study areas, (ii) the instruments used to quantify statistically the cause and effect of WPB, and (iii) how far the influential factors of the framework-model could be conceptualised alongside individuals’ engagement in solid waste reduction activities. In other words, this chapter demonstrates how the conceptual model presented in the preceding chapter was used to implement a series of studies of pro-environmental attitudes, WPB and liking variables. It outlines and explains all steps to develop and to implement the questionnaires as well as all statistical analysis of the collected data. Finally, the waste prevention framework-model is presented and evaluated accordingly to each study field (São Paulo, Sheffield, and Tokyo). As mentioned before, the specific example used here is waste prevention, but there is no constraint on adapting the methodology described here in order to study alternative pro-environmental behaviours (e.g. energy consumption, water conservation).
