ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the Brennanian theory of voting ethics is correct. Most people in the United States and Canada subscribe to what Brennan has previously called the 'Folk Theory of Voting Ethics'. According to Brennan's Principle of Ethical Voting, Ignacio and Carla should not vote at all, for free or for money. If Jaworski were to pay Brennan to vote a certain way, it's not as though Jaworski would literally come to have two votes while Brennan would then have zero. In the same way, suppose the University of Toronto pays Brennan or the College of New Jersey pays Jaworski to give a guest lecture on commodification. People might worry that if votes were commodified, malevolent rich people, can insert George Soros or the Koch brothers, depending on your political predilection, would then buy up votes for their own nefarious ends.
