ABSTRACT

The growing complexity of the workplace impacted by globalization, technology, production, and trade has put the question of human resources development (HRD) at the heart of policy and development strategies of most African countries. Considering HRD's role in developing and unleashing human expertise, this chapter highlights the past experience and the present status of HRD in sub-Saharan Africa. It explores the major challenges associated with HRD in supporting national and economic growth in the region. It specifically examines the development of HRD in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). In addition, we suggest strategies that the SADC region should consider in enhancing the development of human resources. Finally, the chapter explores on the premise that HRD is well suited to addressing the economic and social challenges of the sub-Saharan region and also capable of offering solutions and policy changes for the long-term development and sustainability of the region.
