ABSTRACT

Geographical work in the primary school has vast scope and potential for achieving broad educational aims. At the same time it is today recognised that geographical aims and objectives are themselves central targets for teachers during the primary phase. Among the skills pupils need to have acquired by the end of the primary school years are those relating to the elements of map work, location, direction, orientation, etc. Possession of such skills will not only make the transition to secondary school easier; it will also make learning in the primary school more rigorous and less subject to the kinds of criticisms voiced on the first pages of this book.
