ABSTRACT

Instructions explain how something is done, for example by setting out the rules of a game or telling you the steps one need to take in order to make something. For example introduce the topic by demonstrating how to make something simple, such as a bookmark, a paper aeroplane or a greetings card. Then ask the pupil to write a set of instructions explaining how to make whatever it is that you made and get the pupils to compare their instructions and discuss whose instructions are the clearest and why. As part of a technology project in which they are designing and making a board game, pupil can be asked not only to write a set of rules for the game, but also a set of instructions to explain how to make the board game. Pupil can read the story George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. They can then write a set of instructions explaining how to make the medicine.
