ABSTRACT

Newspapers contain several different kinds of reports and articles. These range from factual reports of events to articles and editorials expressing opinions. One can prepare for the topic by collecting copies of newspapers and also use them to explain the difference between a newspaper report and a newspaper article. The aim of a headline is to summarise what a newspaper report is about and to attract the interest of the readers, so that they will go on to read the story. Since reports give facts about news stories, while articles often contain opinions as well as facts. Often, the front half of a newspaper concentrates on reports, while the second half contains a mixture of articles, puzzles, listings, letters and reviews. When people are studying a history topic, such as the Romans or the Second World War, there is the opportunity to ask the pupil to show their knowledge of a particular event by writing a newspaper report.
