ABSTRACT

A summary is a shortened account containing the main points of a longer piece of writing, such as a page of a book or an article in a magazine. The object of a summary is to pick out the main points of the article or passage one are summarising. In order to make a summary they need to read the passage closely, identifying what the topic is, what each paragraph is about and any key words that are introduced. To write a summary of the passage highlight the topic of the passage in one colour, for example red. Then highlight the topic sentence of each paragraph in another colour, for example yellow. Use a third colour to highlight key words, for example green. There are many opportunities when pupils are researching a topic in science, history or geography for the pupil to write a summary.
