ABSTRACT

The Individualized Education Program (IEP) not only identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses, but also establishes goal and objectives and the intervention techniques and methods teachers should use to help students achieve those goals and objectives. There are several strategies and interventions that school personnel can use to help students receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE). Some of these include direct instruction, differentiated instruction and universal design for learning (UDL). Direct instruction is one of the most often used methods of instruction in schools. It is a highly structured, teacher-directed instructional technique that has proved effective with many students with disabilities. Differentiated instruction is not simply grouping students according to their general ability levels and teaching them as a group. It provides opportunities for students with diverse learning needs to achieve academic success. UDL is similar to direct instruction in that it provides a mechanism for providing appropriate instruction for all individuals.
