ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. The emphasis in the book is of ensuring to create an atmosphere that supports long-term projects for children, particularly so they can really develop thinking and talking. The book discusses the issues and provides ideas, photographs, case studies and questions to ask and also discusses the reasons for having outdoors, and how playing and working outside can impact very favourably on children. It considers why and how the adult's position is critical in making outdoor provision successful and it demonstrates how the whole curriculum can be provided outside. It includes resource lists, ideas and issues to consider. The chapter further discusses the broader issues that can make or break success outside and shares the stories of those who have made changes, or are working with older children.
