ABSTRACT
During the Cultural Revolution and until 1976, all Chinese citizens pinned decorative buttons to their outerwear exactly like political campaign buttons in the United States, typically with Chairman Mao’s picture on them. Some buttons were made of ceramic, and some unfortunate souls went to prison after accidently dropping them on hard surfaces and breaking them. The political environment was, as some of our informants reflected, exactly like North Korea today.
