ABSTRACT

You will be forgiven for wondering what the above quote can possibly have to do with the autistic spectrum, to put it simplistically the paragraph is about unburdening people and allowing them to be themselves, while helping them to manage the expectations placed upon them. That essentially, is what this chapter is concerned with. Giving health and social care professionals the knowledge to understand what an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is and to equip them with the skills to meet the needs of someone with an ASD or to help the person him/herself to manage the needs connected to their condition. There is an outline of the needs of individuals with ASD, including behaviours and mental health needs, and advice given on how to ensure meeting their needs within the health and social care setting. To assist with this, the chapter uses a series of case studies provided by Jon, Jodie and Graham, who are all adults with diagnoses of autism. The scenarios outline some personal experiences which help us to understand some of the differences that an ASD presents.
