ABSTRACT

Recurring reports of workplace incidents involving factory fires and building collapses, some with major losses of life, evidence of blatant tax avoidance by many of our leading multinationals and various food contamination scares point to persistent negligence on the part of business and political leaders. In China, for example, up to 150,000 protests are now recorded each year, reacting to news such as that of rat meat being sold as lamb and of milk and fish being treated with harmful chemicals.1
