ABSTRACT

Students rein inspires them to learn and explore on their own. A recent teaching trend that encourages students to direct their own learning is Genius Hour. Denise Krebs, one of the teachers who founded the movement, describes Genius Hour as "a time when learners are asked what they want to learn, and the teacher gets out of their way". Genius Hour was inspired by different authors and movements, which include Google's 20" time policy, Daniel Pink's Drive movement, and Angela Maier's passion-based learning movement. The students who struggle the most are the ones who are most in need of owning their learning. Teachers can also introduce students to the different ways people brainstorm. Brainstorming can include sketching, drawing, and recording their thoughts. Match students with online mentors. Help them develop a Personal Learning Network (PLN), a network of people they choose to connect with through online communities or social networks, who will contribute to their learning.
