ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how students assessed themselves. Student's response to self-assessment. General thoughts about accomplishing this goal. There is a reason they call standardized tests high-stakes tests. For millions of children worldwide who cannot afford a higher education, a low score means they will not receive the money to attend college nor achieve the academic levels required to enter college. As a society we place a lot of value and status in scores. Students with high grades win awards and are praised for their intelligence by adults, whereas students with low grades are seen as unintelligent. Students with low grades often feel as if they are failures. The programs that they might find they excel, like arts programs such as music or drama. School funding, hiring decisions and other important school decisions are often based on test scores. Several teachers have their students keep portfolios of their work throughout the year and give periodic grades based on these portfolios.
