The Ideal and the Actual

I was virtually born into this field: my parents were both Freudian analysts. My mother’s office was in the apartment, an off-limits enclave protected by frustratingly soundproof doors. Growing up surrounded by my parents’ very grown-up psychoanalyst friends and colleagues, I never thought I’d get old enough to be on the mentorship side of the professional equation: they knew, I was just a kid.
