ABSTRACT
This chapter is concerned with thought: with consciousness, purpose, insight and creativity, and also with the thought processes that make language possible. Because the perspective of comparative study is as useful here as anywhere in psychology, the discussion does not deal only with human thought. Communication in birds and the solution of problems by chimpanzees help us to see how remarkable our own capacities are. We turn now to the central problem of psychology, the human mind.
